The Shape of Light

Light is our connection with the universe, when we lift our gaze to the sky full of stars we visualize light coming from remote angles of the universe that tell us something about the shape of the universe in multiple layers of time.

Shape of light is an ephemeral installation designed by the Spanish designer Juan Antonio Fuentes Brito. In this project the designer investigates the nature of light, its origins and its way of travel across the matter giving rise to reflections and visual perceptions that reveal the deeper nature of light. The installation creates an immersive experience of chromatic resonance that catches the observer’s attention in a state of wonderment.

The shape of light installation has been developed using materials that have a strong relationship with the concept of light due to its superficial and material structure. The installation is made of 3500 fabric stripes, Zulu 2, that have been carefully crafted by the Danish brand Kvadrat. Light, transparent and dynamic, this fabric allows light to expand and filter across the multiple layers creating a diffraction effect that fills the surrounding space. The project has been built using digital fabrication technologies as well as handcraft expertise, creating a bridge between tradition and innovation.

The designer managed to achieve a volumetric manifestation of light thanks to a well studied lighting system that interacts with the textile nature of the materials selected and reverberates across a system of mirrors to create the effect of infinite reflections. This mechanism creates a physical manifestation of lights that transmit in a direct and visual way the reflective process of light.

“Light is indispensable for what we call the visual perception”

The installation becomes a metaphor of the origins of visual perception and the mechanisms that allow us to visualize and understand the surrounding space. The installation is currently located in the Viabizzuno Showroom in Madrid.
